Partisan with Pomegranates – Ner Tamid Series

During the Holocaust, thousands of Jews decided to risk everything and fight as partisans in paramilitary groups. These amazing souls fought for the survival of our people behind enemy lines, and yet photos of their smiling defiant faces are rarely shared. My “Ner Tamid” (“Eternal Light”) series remedies this.

This illustration features partisan fighter Sara Ginaite. She survived the war and emigrated to Canada, where she became an accomplished professor. Her rifle is wrapped in an olive branch. Instead of grenades, she carries pomegranates. The Yiddish around her reads “all people are siblings” and “Fascism and Nazism must be smashed.” A pomegranate is found at the top right and bottom left corners. One is modeled after a “Hechsher,” a Jewish seal, and the other reads “BS”D” (short for “With Heaven’s Help”) which is an abbreviation placed at the top of documents to acknowledge God’s presence.
