Description
A gynandromorph is an organism that contains both male and female characteristics. The term comes from the Greek “gyne” (female), “andro” (male), and “morphé” (form). Animals can have bilateral (symmetrical) or mosaic gynandromorphism. Swallowtail butterflies have striking examples of gynandromorphs which are split directly down the middle, so that each wing is a different color pattern. Although gender is much more complex than this in humans, it’s comforting to know that even among insects it isn’t always so simple.
