Description
My nation, the USA, is infested with guns and a worship of guns. Our children are dying and our government does nothing. I took the rage I feel and channeled it into this series of illustrations, “Arms Into Instruments.” Inspired by Yehuda Amichai’s poem “Untitled,” in which he exhorts us to not only beat our weapons into plowshares but continue beating them into musical instruments, this series of illustrations shows guns being beaten into musical instruments as if by some cosmic hammer.
An AR-15 rifle – the type used in the deadliest mass shootings in America – is being pounded into a trumpet, out of which Amichai’s poem is blasted: (From the Hebrew) “Don’t stop after beating the swords into plowshares, don’t stop! Go on beating and make musical instruments out of them. Whoever wants to make war again will have to turn them into plowshares first.”
Imagery from Micah 4:3 – 4:4 features prominently. These verses prophesy of a world in which war has ceased and every nation lives in peace. You’ll notice Amichai echoed them in his own poem:
“…And they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks…But every man shall sit under his grapevine or fig tree with no one to disturb him.”
The ornamentation in the sections around the trumpet is that of grapevines and fig leaves, and the colors were sampled directly from images of figs and fig trees. In the section farthest to the right, there are endless AR-15 bullets, only to be overtaken by the vines and fig leaves farther left.
