A riff on my Queer Zoology work, I made this piece to be something that could be printed and put in a window, or made part of someone’s online profile. The rights of Trans folks are under attack like never before, and people outside the trans community must stand up and take action in defense of their human rights.
I’m aware that acts of performative allyship are fraught. But I and many others will attest to the fact that when we see signs like this in otherwise hostile places, it makes us feel a bit less alone.
I chose the giraffe because I used it for another illustration with the same sentiment. I wanted something unusual and disarming. I also tried to use active language as opposed to more tepid words like “support.” what is needed right now are people who will take direct action. This is also why I added phrases like “Healthcare Access” and “Civil rights protections” in one of them – it’s not enough to say “love is love,” there are systemic issues that need addressing by name.
