Description
Based on a propaganda poster addressing immigrants published in the Yiddish language during WWI, this one updates it to address Afghan immigrants. It reads: “Welcome Afghan Refugees! We said we would bring liberty to you. Now we must bring you to liberty. There is the Golden Door!” This last sentence references Emma Lazarus’s poem inside the Statue of Liberty, “The New Colossus.”
The American destruction of Afghanistan lasted an entire generation in a botched war that destroyed countless lives, and cost trillions of dollars that could have been invested in social programs and improving American lives. We claimed to do so in the name of “bringing liberty and freedom” to the Afghan people. Since we utterly failed in that fool’s errand, we have no moral choice but to bring as many refugees as possible to safety, especially the women and girls who are most oppressed under the Taliban’s regime.
