Partisan Sara Fortis – Ner Tamid Series – Jewish Resistance

$25.00$28.00

This illustration features famous Greek Jewish partisan Sara Fortis. She lead her own all-woman group of partisan fighters during WW2, and unlike many women in the partisan movement, didn’t shy away from front line combat. This illustration makes liberal use of Greek and Sephardic imagery: The colors come from official Greek regalia. The olive branch motif abounds, and an olive branch wraps around her rifle. The architectural and floral motifs are taken straight from designs used in Salonika, Greece. Salonikan Jews were Sephardic, so two Ladino phrases are featured: “No one is a prisoner if they can escape,” and “A good fight leads to a good peace!” The Hebrew lettering is a stylized version of the “Rashi Script” typeface, which was used by Ladino speakers.

Description

During the Holocaust, thousands of Jews decided to risk everything and fight as partisans in paramilitary groups. These amazing souls fought for the survival of our people behind enemy lines, and yet photos of their smiling defiant faces are rarely shared. My “Ner Tamid” (“Eternal Light”) series remedies this.

At the top left is a “Hechsher” symbol that says in Yiddish “We will outlive them” with the Hebrew words “Ner Tamid” stylized to look like a lamp. On the top right is BS”D in Rashi Script as opposed to the traditional Hebrew square script.
